Production Company Files Lawsuit over Rights to “Dumb and Dumber” Sequel

“Dumb and Dumber” is headed to court.  No, this is not a new law firm but a lawsuit has erupted over ownership rights to the movie and its characters.  The production company behind the first movie is set to bring Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels back together for a sequel to the popular comedy but two producers of the original movie claim ownership rights to the characters.
Brad Krevoy and Steve Stabler, two of the producers behind the 1994 movie Dumb and Dumber, were sued in California Superior Court by the movie’s production company, Red Granite Productions, who claim to be the sole owner of rights to the film. The production company brought suit seeking a declaratory judgment that the two producers have no rights to be involved in the new film.
dumbanddumber.jpgAccording to the suit, Krevoy and Stabler claim that a prior agreement with New Line Productions stemming from the original Dumb and Dumber gives them certain rights in the movie’s sequel, including the right to be involved in and receive credit and compensation for production. However, Red Granite asserts that because it has no agreement of its own with the two producers and because they have not actually provided any production services or been asked to provide such services to Red Granite in connection with the sequel, Red Granite does not owe them anything. Further, Red Granite claims that even if Krevoy and Stabler did have any rights under their prior agreement, those rights will be quashed by a new agreement in the works between Red Granite and New Line granting Red Granite all rights in the sequel.
Krevoy and Stabler are obviously not happy about Red Granite’s attempt to oust them from the project. According to Stabler, this is not the first time Red Granite has tried to oppress producers. Stabler says Red Granite has tried to weasel its way out of giving producers credit on other movies in the past and has even been the subject of litigation for such conduct. This time, however, Krevoy and Stabler intend to put up a fight.
Not since the The Godfather: Part II has such an epic sequel been planned and we hope for a quick resolution to this matter.
